School Waste Collection towards a circular economy: SYMSITES engagement in Muro de Alcoy

The waste management system in Muro de Alcoy, Spain, is moving towards a circular economy thanks to the cooperation between the City Council of Muro de Alcoy and Fovasa and Facsa, members of SYMSITES’ consortium and experts in the field of waste management and water distribution.

The collaboration aims at improving the collection and treatment of the organic fraction of urban solid waste within the city’s municipal schools.

The first meeting, held on October 20, 2023, was also attended by the catering company SERUNION, responsible for the food service of the municipal schools, as well as the heads of the education centres.

The company Fovasa, in charge of the collection of municipal solid waste (MSW) in the municipality, will install and guarantee the maintenance of the collection points at the schools CEIP El Bracal and CEIP Montcabrer. Facsa, on the other hand, will carry out the treatment of the waste collected together with the urban and industrial wastewater from the Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) of Alcoy, where the Ecosite will be located. The project is also supported by EPSAR, Entidad Pública de Saneamiento de Aguas Residuales de la Comunidad Valenciana.

The beginning of this collaboration is an example of how SYMSITES can benefit small cities and municipalities thanks to the cooperation among diverse actors committed to building a more sustainable waste management system.
