SYMSITES presents the Spanish EcoSite as a model of urban-industrial symbiosis for water reuse in the textile industry
Castellón, June 2025 – The European project SYMSITES took part in the technical conference organized by Facsa, held within the framework of the LIFE REWAINCER project and the EU Green Week, with the presentation of the Spanish EcoSite—a pilot initiative focused on the reuse of reclaimed water in industrial processes within the textile sector, under a broader approach of urban-industrial symbiosis.
The event, hosted at Facsa’s headquarters, brought together over 60 professionals from institutional, industrial, agricultural, and academic sectors to discuss the opportunities and challenges of reusing water from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this context, SYMSITES showcased its approach based on the integration of advanced technologies for treatment, monitoring, and resource recovery, applied in a real industrial setting. The project promotes collaboration between cities and industries to achieve more efficient and circular water management.

In the first session of the day, several European projects addressing water reuse in strategic sectors were presented. SYMSITES stood out for its focus on optimizing the water cycle in the textile industry, through solutions that enable water loop closure, reduce water footprint, and improve energy efficiency—framed within a symbiosis model that seeks to maximize resource use between urban and industrial environments.
The event also featured two high-level round tables. The first focused on the challenges and opportunities of water reuse in industrial and agricultural contexts, offering a multisectoral perspective on specific needs and technological advances. The second addressed the institutional synergies required to scale up reuse projects, emphasizing the importance of a clear regulatory framework, public-private cooperation, and integrated water resource planning.
SYMSITES’ participation in this technical forum reinforces its role as a demonstrator project for circular solutions in industrial environments, aligned with the goals of the European Green Deal and the transition toward a more resilient and sustainable economy.
