Assessment of Nanofiltration for Ammonia Separation from Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor Effluents – A New Publication by BOKU
BOKU University researchers have recently published a scientific article entitled “Assessment of nanofiltration for ammonia separation from anaerobic membrane bioreactor effluents”, exploring the potential of membrane technologies for nutrient recovery from anaerobic treatment systems.
Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) are increasingly recognised as an efficient solution for wastewater treatment, combining organic matter removal with renewable energy generation through biogas production. However, the effluents generated by these systems still contain significant concentrations of ammonia, creating both environmental challenges and opportunities for resource recovery.
The study evaluates the application of nanofiltration as a downstream treatment technology for separating and concentrating ammonia from AnMBR effluents. By assessing membrane performance and separation efficiency, the research provides valuable insights into how nutrient recovery can be integrated into advanced wastewater treatment schemes.
Recovering ammonia from wastewater is increasingly considered a key strategy for promoting circular resource use, as the recovered nitrogen can potentially be reused in fertilizer production and other industrial applications. The findings contribute to the growing body of research focused on transforming wastewater treatment plants into resource recovery facilities capable of generating value from residual streams.
The publication highlights the important role that membrane technologies can play in improving nutrient management, reducing environmental impacts, and advancing more sustainable water treatment solutions. These objectives closely reflect the SYMSITES vision of fostering innovative technologies that support circular economy and industrial symbiosis approaches.
