SYMSITES shares lessons for replication

For the past four years the SYMSITES pilots transformed wastewater and waste materials from the olive industry in Greece, the meat industry in Austria, the textiles industry in Spain and the beer industry in Denmark into feedstock for industrial processes, seeking to achieve a circular economy in these sector. The project has now created a series of materials enabling public authorities and other relevant stakeholders across Europe to gain a better understanding of how they can replicate in their own context SYMSITES’ efforts to pilot innovative solutions and technologies based on the concept of Industrial-Urban Symbiosis.

SYMSITES main lessons and insights have been implemented into a training course that seeks to support relevant stakeholders in adopting sustainable practices. As many SME’s, industries, and local and regional authorities lack the necessary knowledge, technical expertise, and strategic frameworks to implement I-US effectively,  the training course is designed to address these gaps by equipping relevant stakeholders with the skills, methodologies, and tools required to drive successful I-US initiatives.

The project’s Replication Report evaluates the potential for implementing the technological and social models developed in SYMSITES in new regional contexts. It identifies replicable components, enabling conditions, and contextual barriers and examines key technologies such as anaerobic membrane bioreactors, biogas systems, and flotation units for scalability. Its findings emphasize that successful replication requires not just transferring technology, but adapting it to the social, economic, and environmental context of each region, showing that a successful strategic circular transition requires the alignment of technological innovation with social inclusion and policy frameworks.

The SYMSITES virtual tours showcase each of the four “Ecosites” in Austria, Denmark, Greece and Spain, highlighting how each Ecosite is implementing I-US in practice to valorise the waste from its industries. In these videos the Ecosite managers provide a tour of the pilot facilities highlighting the main technologies and their key aims and objectives. The SYMSITES replication webinar offers further technical insights into the project with each Ecosite presenting the main context behind its operations.

For more information on the SYMSITES’ replication materials, check out the project website or the self-assessment tool that gives circular economy practitioners an overview of what to look for based on their needs. Want to know more? Join the SYMSITES dissemination webinar (21 May, 10-11 CEST). The webinar will highlight the key replicable outcomes and focus on the road ahead after the project’s end.
