SYMSITES seeks solutions to non-technological barriers to boost urban-industrial symbiosis
Alcoy, November 28, 2024. – Facsa, Fovasa Medioambiente and AITEX have held a workshop entitled “Non-technological barriers: SYMSITES project” at the AITEX facilities in Alcoy, with the aim of identifying and discussing the non-technological challenges that may hinder the industrial implementation of the innovations developed in the project.
During the event, the SYMSITES approach was presented, a project that promotes the recovery of water, energy and value-added products such as fertilizers and molecules for biofuels or bioplastics. Attendees also participated in discussions focused on non-technological barriers such as regulations, financing and communication strategies, proposing specific measures to overcome them.
Led by AITEX and funded by the European Union within the framework of the Horizon-Europe programme, SYMSITES involves the participation of 31 international partners. In Spain, its pilot plant is located at the Alcoy WWTP (owned by the Public Entity for Wastewater Sanitation of the Valencian Community (EPSAR), where Facsa and Fovasa Medioambiente are leading the technological implementation. As part of the day, a visit was made to the pilot plant managed by Facsa, where the advances made in integrated waste management and resource recovery technologies were shown.
This workshop has had the presentations of Raquel Tamarit Coronado and José Antonio Magdalena Cadelo, R&D technicians of Facsa and Fovasa Medioambiente, respectively, and has brought together representatives of the environmental, textile and cosmetic sector, including entities such as the Institute of Ceramic Technology, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), ATEVAL and companies such as Francisco Jover SA, Germaine de Capuccini SAU and Greene Enterprise SL.
SYMSITES, which will conclude in May 2026, is a key project to promote the symbiosis between municipal entities and industries, facing current climate and economic challenges with innovative solutions.
