SYMSITES presented at the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition

The project partner IFA-Tulln – BOKU University, represented by Ferdinand Hummel, presented the SYMSITES project at the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE2024).

The event

The event took place from the 24 to the 27 of June 2024 in Marseille, France. A diverse audience, representing industry and academia from all over the world, attended the conference. This allowed IFA-Tulln to discuss the project innovations with experts in biomass utilisation in many different areas of application.

The Austrian EcoSite

The project partner explained the process and the technologies behind the Austrian EcoSite. Here, wastewater from the meat industry can be treated and transformed into biogas and fertilizers. 

The focus was on the lab Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR). This technology, set up at IFA-Tulln, can treat the wastewater from the meat processing industry in a co-digestion with blood waste from the slaughterhouse.

Moreover, the EcoSite can produce a valuable fertilizer from biogas treatment. In fact, biogas is treated with a desulfurization column, and the fertilizer is produced by the sulfuric acid for the ammonium recovery in a hollow fibre contactor.

Ferdinand Hummel received the student award for his contribution. This showed positive feedback on the innovation discussed and encouraged the project to further push in this direction.
